US Citizenship through marrying girlfriend

Post Tue Oct 25, 2011 1:32 pm

Is it possible for a Canadian man to become American by marrying his girlfriend from the US?

It is certainly a possibility as I have seen several American women over the years.

Citizenship by marriage is not instantaneous.

You would get a GC first (assuming she is a US citizen) and three years later, if you are still married, you could apply for citizenship.

You seem intent in getting in any way you can, eh? ](*,)

Same question as when you were talking about the entrepreneurial path: what is the ultimate goal here? Yes if you meet someone who is American they can sponsor you through marriage, but, at least if understand you correctly, there doesn't seem to any particular American woman in your life right at the moment.

Marriage and entrepreneurship are the two GC paths where you get an initial two year conditional GC, and then have to show that your plans haven't changed significantly (still married or still employing Americans) after two years. Only after you successfully remove the conditions after two years does the GC really become permanent. You aren't going to get a quickie GC by either route.

So the question remains: what is the real goal here?

ok seriously if it was up to me I would stay Canadian, but most of my American girlfriends love the US so much that they want me to be American. It's not my choice really. It's the whole Americanism thing.

If she is someone you are serious about, then you should consider marriage. She is asking you to make a permanent commitment to her country. Such a request IMHO is only reasonable in the context of a permanent relationship--eg marriage.

If she is simply the latest in a long string, and she is not expected to be the last, then tourist status should work.

Jumping through the entrepreneurship visa/GC hoops is, IMHO, a nonstarter if the goal of coming to the USA is to pursue a heterosexual relationship--given that there is already a GC path for heterosexual couples.

You can visit for up to six months while deciding whether to get married--but as LAWS will tell you that privilege cannot be abused by repeated visits which amount to de facto moving to the USA.

Moving to another country is a serious life change. Canadians don't always understand this in the context of the USA because they think the two countries are very similar culturally or something. If a relationship is the reason for this serious decision, the relationship should be a serious one.
