US credit history

Post Sun Dec 31, 2006 2:14 pm

Hi Everyone,

I just found this board, wish I had discovered it sooner! I've been in the US for 5 years now, and am preparing to move home to Canada within a year or so. We've all seen how Canadian credit history doesn't help when we move down here, but what about the other way around? I've made a coupla boo-boos here, and my credit is just "ok". Is that going to be a problem when I'm back home?

Thanks!

No, so why not get a large loan, declare bankruptcy, and then, take all that cash and come to Canada? I heard of a Japanese American who got the USA to pay for his education by signing a contract, but then refused to serve, renounced his US citizenship and went back to Japan. As the United States cannot force a Japanese national who is not an American citizen serve their armed forces, this fellow got free education in the States and left for Japan. I wonder if Canadians who are dual citizens could do the same? I know that Canada and the US have good relations so this wont be as easy. I know that a Canadian who screws the UK over NOT be able to get away with it, as the Crown can hunt down any of their own colonials down across the commonwealth.

I don't know for sure, but trying to get an American bank to look at your Canadian credit history is like pulling teeth with plyers. Probably not much different the other way around, so if you've got a not to wonderful credit rating in the US, it may or may not affect your rating in Canada.

Remember when you moved to the US you had NO credit rating, which is worse than having a bad credit rating. Again, it may or may not be the same going back the other way. Of course Canadian credit bureaus have different grading (?) system anyway, so they may just look at what it was like before you left.
