US jobs for Electrical Engineering grad

Post Tue Dec 23, 2008 2:08 am

Hi guys,

I am about to graduate with an Electrical Engineering degree in April and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to provide me information about potential US employers I can try applying to. I have looked at many different companies but I'm nto sure if they would be willing to hire foreign applicants. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am mostly interested in jobs located in the warmer areas such as California, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, but mostly a job close to New York City if at all possible. Thanks.

FPL sounds like the simplest idea, you can go in as TN-1 as an engineer.

Try posting your resume on job sites such as Monster, Job Bank USA, and others. When you require a work visa, there is a toggle to check off if you require 'sponsorship' and for some employers it exludes you, to others it's irrelevant, and if you're qualified for the job, they'll bring you on-board. If a company isn't interested in hiring foreign workers, they use the filter for that reason.

If you have a professional affiliation(s), check out their job board(s) as well. There are headhunter sites which will match you up with suitable employers, most of them are no charge to the job seeker (they make their fee on the employer) try a search engine to find occupational-specific sites.

I just checked monster's site and with the job title of electrical engineer and a preference for New York City, 111 jobs came up. From the list generated I would take a look at the different companies listed and start making enquiries. In the summary of qualifications on your resume (or in your cover letter) you can always state you're an TN-1 (NAFTA), H1-B eligible candidate as well.

It's illegal to discriminate against foreign workers under the Civil Rights Act 1964 (as amended). Some States have even tougher laws which extends it to private lodging as well. Obviously if they cannot secure immigration priviledges for you they cannot hire you, but they cannot refuse to offer you a job or interview you merely because you are a foreigner.

Anyway like I said, he might want to try FPL.

It is illegal but they still do it, unfortunately. With one company, I had a series of interviews that resulted in a offer, only to have it rescinded based on the fact I was a 'foreigner' - and that came from the companys legal department. In writing. The local office was disappointed, but had to go with the decision. This coming from a company with a well-known international identity.

Right off their website;
The company's commitment to human rights is a fundamental element of its daily operations. Our objective is to be an exemplary global corporate citizen. Employees are expected to:

* honor the human rights and respect the individual dignity of all persons globally;
* support diversity and equal opportunity in employment and freedom of association;
* not tolerate unlawful discrimination in company workplaces;
continually work to provide safe and healthy workplaces for all employees; and
* reject the use of any form of forced or indentured labor or child labor in the production or manufacture of goods.

P.S. I had a manager once tell me that he felt having a client discuss business with a female was 'insulting' to his clients. I won't elaborate on what he said about age. But sex, age, and other forms of discrimination are very much alive and well here. Forewarned is forearmed.

Hey Steven, what is FPL? and by the way I'm female not male lol. I will definitely give Monster and Job Bank USA a shot when I get the time. I've been contemplating whether it makes sense to put a US address and telephone # on my resume but I keep worrying about if the employer wants an in-person interview then that might be a bit hectic.

So report them to the EEOC. It's not hard. In fact you can sue them pretty easily if the EEOC upholds the complaint. Obviously it's tricky because there may be a well-founded belief that you have zero chance of getting work authorization, but frankly you're an idiot to apply for a job where there's no chance of you getting authorization anyway.

If you clearly fall under TN-1 for example and all they've got to do is write a letter and they won't even interview you because of that, that is discrimination, no doubt about it.

Know your rights. Frankly the first thing I would do is write a letter to monster.com and tell them that they are encouraging discriminatory hiring practices, which itself could be illegal under the various Acts.
