US PR-Live in US/work Canada ?RRSP?TFSA

Post Sat Dec 11, 2010 1:31 am

Good Day everyone.
Thanks for reading my questions.

I have lived in the US for last 18 years filing US tax yearly and have a IRA/401K. I am a US Green Card holder and a Canadian citizen. I now have a job accross the Border in Surrey BC and will live in Bellingham, WA so I will be a Border Commuter. My employer will be a Canadian company.
So many questions:
Can I open an RRSP and TFSA?
How do I do this? at a bank?
I will be a US Resident so I will file US tax return every year.
But do I file a Canadian Tax return every year?
Does anyone know if there is a TurboTax program that can do US and Canadian tax ?

thanks for any advice

Since you still live inUS, you cannot open a TFSA (US citizens are advised againts TFSA even when living in Canada, so don't worry).

RRSP is possible, it will be tax deductible in US and Canada -- you will file a return in Canada for your wages only. In US you will file as normal.

I answer these questions at forums.serbinski.com if you wish to get elaboration

If you are an expat, you should consult a tax professional and make sure you don't end up owing tax that you knew nothing about. You can call us at 713-774-4467 and we can take a look at your tax situation and give you all the information you need over a phone consultation. You can also find expat tax help on our taxproblem.org website.
