US resident, Canada citizen need Tax Advice

Post Sat Jun 21, 2008 4:16 pm

Hello everyone,

I have just joined today. I think this is a great site!

I am a Canadian citizen and moved to the US 5 years ago and I am a US resident since then.

I am filing US taxes here in the US but I keep on getting mail at a former address in Canada that I missed the previous years filling. Can someone tell me what will I need to do to stop receiving these letters?

You need to declare to the CRA that you are no longer resident in Canada. They might want you to do an NR-73. On the T1 you have to declare the date that you left, so on your final tax return you should have checked that box. If you didn't file a T1 for the last year you were in Canada, you will be assessed a late filing fee and any penalties.

You might also have needed to file a dual-status return when you moved to the US for the first year that you were there.

If you do need to go back and file a T1, best time to say you left is 31st December otherwise your personal exemptions will be reduced by however many days and you will almost certainly owe tax, and maybe penalties on that amount.
