Hi!
If anyone has advice which can help me understand my tax liabilities it's much appreciated!
I am a Canadian citizen who is attending school in Ontario, however, I lived in the US for many years prior to attending school in Canada and have a greencard. I want to claim that I am still a resident of the US.
Last year I spent 8 months of the year working in the US as an intern, and 4 months in Canada going to school. I made no money whatsoever in Canada but paid tuition.
I was planning on filing a standard US tax return as a resident and possibly claiming my Canadian tuition (using a FAFSA #) on the 1040EZ return.
But here's where I became confused. I was planning on filing a Canadian tax return as a non-resident but when I filled it out it said I owe the Canadian government close to a grand. I don't understand why I would owe the Canadian government tax on my foreign income if I am claiming to be a non-resident? I did not even think I would be required to filed a Canadian tax return this year since I did not earn money in Canada and I am claiming not to be a resident. The main reason I wanted to file a Canadian tax return is to transfer my tuition credits from current and previous years to my Grandma.
Do I have tax liability to the Canadian government? Is it better not to filed at all in Canada? Is there away for me to transfer tuition credits to my Grandma?
Thanks a lot for info!
