US Savings Account?

Post Sun Oct 07, 2007 5:29 pm

Hello,

I've been able to open a Bank of America account without a SSN, however i haven't been able to find a savings account that i can open. they say i need a SSN.

Does anyone know of a US savings account that as a Canadian without a SSN I'd be able to open?

Thanks!

if BoA won't let you have a savings account where you've already got a chequing account (which of course makes no sense to me whatsoever), then I can't think of who would.

Maybe RBC Centura.

I heard there is a new HSBC account that is a "world account" that you can open in Canada and they have branches in the US and you can access the money without fees. I am guessing you wouldn't need an SSN there if you open it up in Canada.

Get a TIN. They need it for the W-9, make sure you file the right kind of W-8 to avoid the withholding. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf
