US Taxes while living in Canada

Post Mon Apr 12, 2010 2:28 am

Hello,

I was working in Minnesota (on a TN visa) up until February of 2009, when I was laid off. I then moved back to Canada and collected unemployment benefits. My question is "Do I need to now file taxes in the US for these benefits?" I am now working and living in Europe with no immediate plans to move back to the US.

Thanks!

You need to file -- at a minimum -- your wages and UI on a 1040NR.

You UI would also be reported in Canada.

I also have the same question.
I am a Canadian citizen and was laid off in 2009. I started receiving unemployment insurance in 2009 after I got back to Canada.

I am doing a 1040-nr-ez and do not see a line for unemployment compensation. I am wondering where the amount is entered on a 1040-nr-ez.

Any suggestions anyone?
