US TN Visa Prospect

Post Thu Mar 11, 2010 2:13 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm sure my question must have been addressed in other ways but I would appreciate it if those who have gone through the process could shed some light.

I am thinking of applying for a TN visa as "Lead Technologies Vendor Mgmt" an actual job title. My job descriptions are closer to Computer Systems Analyst as per the NAFTA job list. My employer is a big forture 100 company and will not change the job title. Do you think it will be an issue at the border to secure a TN visa? Obviously, they can say job title is not exactly as "Computer Systems Analyst".

Also, if one gets denied a TN visa, will there be any adverse consequences for any future US travel as I travel South of the border for business and pleasure all the time. I don't think it should be an issue but wanted to find out the experiences of TN rejecters.

Please share your thoughts, ideas or experiences. I appreciate it.

Thanks!

The job letter needs to specify "Computer Systems Analyst". The letter can mention the employer's internal title as well and explain that that internal title maps to the "Computer Systems Analyst" NAFTA role.

Thanks for your reply! Interesting even though if the job description once they read will make it pretty obvious. I think they just want to find stupid ways to reject people somehow.

I was rejected for a TN in August 2008 due to my letter not being addressed to USCBP. They processed me, sent my Uhaul back across the Bluewater Bridge to Canada, and the next day with a new letter I was approved. I've worked in the US ever since; have entered as a tourist, TN, and H1B since, now approved for step 1 of a green card. Obviously, rejection wasn't the end of the world. However, it does show up on my record somewhere, and for a two or three month period in 2009 (happened in March, but not in January or May) I was automatically sent to secondary screening. Was a real hassle with preclearance flights. USCBP began a policy of fingerprinting all TN holders, and when they did, I got flagged. The guy at Pearson explained it to me, told me he thought it was a waste of their time, but warned me to get to flights extra early. Thankfully, they had stopped doing that by May 09!

My TN letter wasnot adressed to anyone in particualr and had no problems.

Another case of CBP bad hair day messing up TNers life.

I had a really young guy that first time and his shift was just about to end. He did have some sort of checklist with him, and checking the letter was addressed to them was on that list. I think I still have the list somewhere; so annoying since all of my TN friends in Michigan had gotten (and have since gotten) TNs without ever needing to address the letter to CBP. I really have no idea where the address thing came from...

I'm sure it comes from some over-zealous lawyer or an overly worried TN candidate who pestered a POE one time about who EXACTLY the letter was supposed to be addressed to, and then, becuase the POE was annoyed with that person, they decided to make to put it on their checklist if anyone asked.

That grew into it being "mandatory" in that POEs mind.
