US to withdraw from NAFTA?

Post Fri Mar 05, 2010 7:46 am

I read an article where a congressman from Mississippi is trying to push the withdrawl of the US from NAFTA. I'm curious if this has any teeth & should be cause for alarm, especially for those of us with TN status? Does anyone have any knowledge how this might play out & what consequences there might be?

Yes, you should be concerned that Congress has members from Mississippi.

I would doubt, however, that the congressman has more than a few teeth.

I think it highly unlikely that the USA will pull out of NAFTA any time soon. However IMHO one should ALWAYS be concerned (not necessarily alarmed) at any time when one's livelihood is solely dependent on the whims of a foreign power in abiding by a treaty as opposed to solid employment in one's own country. In such situations one should always be concerned enough to aggressively push either for a stronger status in the host country and/or a good job offer back in the home country.
