use my car to move?

Post Fri Apr 15, 2011 11:16 am

Hello everyone,

I apologise if this has question has been asked. I did search but couldn't find an answer. so here goes...

I am Canadian living in the states. I am moving back to Canada soon. I want to use my car to move a small amount of household goods. I do not want to import my car. I want to move, unpack, turn around return to the states and sell it...has anyone done this? is it possible to do this? I have called different numbers and have got different answers...any info you can give is greatly appreciated.

thank you
mtlAlex :-)

Well, what have been the differnt answers. The 2 issues you face are:

(a) if you have already established Cdn home, you cannot drive the car in without importing it. If you still live in US, it is not a problem.

(b) if you have lots of expensive and new goods to import, the border will want to tax you, but if you are considered a returning resident, you can usually import almost all posessions duty free. For this though you *might* have to have an established Cdn residence.

So that *might* be where the conflict is: You have a Cdn home: you can't drive the car. You don't have a Cdn home, you can't bring your gooods tax and duty free.

This should easily be overcome at the border by expalining your situation (that you still live in US for xx more days), and that you have definite plan to sell the car in US before coming back.

Thank you for the response Agnelson !

That was exactly what i wanted to know. I am heading to Canada with my goods to sign a lease and move in what few things I am taking (B4 and B4a are filled out and ready) and therefore be a returning resident. Then I will return to the U.S.A. for a week before I return to Canada. Sell the car and head back. Easy enough.. i hope !

Thank you again :D
