I intend to bring my laptop (Toshiba, purchased in Canada) with me to university in England. Will I be OK with bringing just a plug adapter with me or should I buy a transformer here? ( I am really limited re: weight of my luggage for my flight to the UK.) How about my charger for my rechargeable lithium batteries for my digital camera? Should I buy a recharger there or bring my Canadian one and use a plug adapter? And my Ipod charger? Sorry if all these questions are dumb ones; I'm sure they've all been answered previously in all these pages of posts.

It is usually written on the power supply if it supports 240V. Most laptops do. I'm pretty sure you only need an adapter, but check anyway just to make sure your laptop does not explode when you get in London. That might be disappointing.

I don't think buying a transformer for a charger is a good idea, considering the price of a charger. Buy one over there, it'll be cheaper plus you'll save weight in your luggages.

Aren't iPods supposed to charge with a USB key through a computer?

99.9% of laptops nowadays come with a transformer that will work on any voltage from 100V-240V, it will say on the transformer if it does, something like INPUT: 100V-240V. So all you need is a plug adapter really, they sell them at the airport.

Otherwise you'll need a stepdown transformer which will probably cost as much as buying a replacement transformer/charger.

Although not mandatory, I do like to use the power converter with the fuse when using my laptop in the UK. Its nice to have that extra level of protection against electrical surges and power outages.

As a note i made the mistake of thinking i would be able to buy a universal plug adapeter in the uk for my ps2 when i brought it over, they are very difficult to find the closest we got was a shaver plug (which does work). Definatly buy adapters in canada for canadian appliances
