VAT increase and flights with Canadian Affair

Post Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:48 pm

I just contacted Canadian Affair and their prices will increase after Jan 4, 2011 with the VAT hike. So the prices that are currently listed for 2011 will go up after this date.

I was just wondering if anyone has had a friend or relative book them flights from the Canadian end. Persumably these prices will not go up as there is no tax hike in canada and it would follow that the cost of tickets would be cheaper if you book in Canada.

If anyone has done this - I'd be grateful to hear about it. Or if anyone knows why this might not work I'd be grateful to hear about that as well.

Many thanks!

are u sure canadian affair told u exactly that? the uk doesn't charge vat on air travel so, if the fares are going up, it's because of air transat or thomas cook, not the government. the only uk government tax on air travel is air passenger duty, which is not changing in january 2011.

u can compare the prices urself between the uk and canadian pages of http://www.aircanada.com if u really want to be sure that the prices are virtually identical for the same flight.

i believe that neither canadianaffair.com nor canadianaffair.ca let u buy tickets that start on the "other" side but, even if it were possible, there would be no vat saving.

ian. :)
