Visa and work in the UK

Post Mon Jun 26, 2006 10:56 am

Hello, Im planning on going living in the UK for a year starting September. The visa issue is very confusing and I was wondering if people could help me out with it.

1) Is a visa all thats required to work in the UK?
2) What is up with this 6 month rule?

Thats all I can think of now.

Hi,

You do Definately need a Visa to work in the UK.
I think the 6-month rule is that (as a Canadian Cit) you can stay in the UK as someone on holiday for 6 months with no visa.
But no working!

Hope that helps

Working holiday visa

Hi Shayward,

I did a working holiday with BUNAC (the SWAP programme) when I came to London the first time. The visa is two years and you're allowed to work for 12 months in total - so it's great for earning money to finance your travel around the UK and Europe.
You can apply for the visa directly from the UK High Commission in Ottawa, but if you're finding the whole thing confusing then it might be better to go with an agency (I think BUNAC is one of many organisations that organize work abroad programmes).
If you're over 30 then you will need to find a job that will sponsor you for a work permit (very difficult) or find another type of visa that you qualify for!
Good luck :D
