Visa Application Process

Post Sun Dec 30, 2007 11:12 pm

I've done a great deal of research on this topic however all of my questions haven't been answered so I was hoping someone here might be able to help.

I've started the online application process for an ancestry visa, when I reached the section immigration status there did not appear to be an option which covered my situation.

I AM Eligible for this visa. I am a commonwealth citizen with a grandparent born in the UK. However this was not listed under the eligibility for right of abode section. I selected the closest option I saw which was that I had a parent born in the uk and I was born outside of the uk.

I then put in the section where you can add information the CORRECT info re: application through my grandparent.

Did anyone else encounter this problem? Am I doing something wrong here?

ALSO for my grandfather's birth certificate we were sent ' A Certified Copy of an entry of Birth.' Is this a birth certificate?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am currently trying to apply for UK ancestry using the online application and have come accross the same problem. I think there is a glitch with their system and for some reason when UK Ancestry is selected on the initial start up screen it is linking the user to the WRONG application form, as the right of abode question should not appear on the UK ancestry application. You can download a pdf of what the questions should be and that question is certainly not on it. There should be a number of questions re employment and where you are going to be staying etc, but at the moment it does not prompt you for any of these.

I have contacted the Foreign Commonwealth Office via email and they have passed on my query to a technical person and I am awaiting a reply.

Hey, thanks for the response.

I've been finding this increasingly frustrating. I have contacted Worldbridge a couple of times, and have been brushed off each time with them telling me that they can't tell me what I ought to fill in as it's my responsibility, when I'm simply asking what part of section six is applicable to the UK ancestry application.

Let me know how it goes for you and if there's any way around this.
I really need to get my application in and completed. The website for the british high commission in ottawa's website says that all applications need to be done online. *frustrated sigh*

I'm dealing with the aussie high commision in canberra. I called them today (at my expense, what a rip off), and spoke to one of the visa consultants. He acknowledged that it was asking me the incorrect question but told me to just put something down even if its wrong (such as my father was born in uk) and then in section 7 - additional information, explain that I am applying for ancestry through my grandparent being born in the UK. I told him that the online application was not asking any questions about employment prospects, etc which are shown on the pdf version of the form. He said just to supply any additional information such as job offers etc.

It all sounds very sketchy to me, I'm going to wait a few more days to see what response I get from the FCO and hopefully they will rectify the problem otherwise I will just have to complete the form as is and try to supply all the other information which I think they would need. I can't wait too long time running out.

I got a response from the fco below;

"Many thanks for raising the issue with us. We were aware of this problem and do apologise for any inconvenience caused and can assure you that we are in the process of rectifying the situation.

In the meantime, as far as your application is concerned, could you select any criteria even though it might not apply to yourself and then on the additional details page at the end of the application make the necessary amendments.

Again sincere apologies for any incovenience.

Visa4UK Technical Team"

Thanks for the info andrew. I suppose that is my only option as I need to apply soon.

Thank you for sharing your progress so far, I've also e-mailed the FCO thinking that if more people e-mailed them about the issue the better. So far they just told me to select ancestry and go through the form anyways. We will see I guess.

Sounds like the austrailian authorities have been more helpful than their canadian counterparts thus far.

What I'll probably do is print off the PDF application and include it with my papers when I send them in.

You were right that it did sound a little sketchy. but really what else is there to do? :-) Good luck with your application.

Thought you might be amused by the fact that the FCO e-mailed me and confirmed the problem but also stated no one else has reported the issue.

:-)

I filled out the UK Ancestory Visa online form and there is indeed an option for grandparent . its quite long and lists . "blah blah blah OR a grandparent born in . etc etc . i missed it twice till i read everyone carefully . hope that helps .

edit okay . i went back into the uk visas site . this is the line

"As someone who, at birth, was a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies and has or had a grandparent born, registered, naturalised or adopted in the UK"

Think that covers it? tricky little "and has or had a"

Yeah I did see that option and that is the one I selected because it was the only one that mentioned grandparents but I don't think it strictly applies as it talks about someone who was a citizen of the UK AND has a grandparent born in the UK. Either way I just mentioned in the additional notes what my situation is.

Thanks for all the help and info.

I noted the same thing, and when I requested help from the visa authorities both in britain and in canada I was sent conflicting messages. I have however bitten the bullet as they say and applied.
