Visa Issue

Hi -
I have a question regarding home office issues and I have been unable to get a response from that authority nor have I been able to find the necessary information online. I currently reside in the UK on a student visa. My course is set to end in June but my visa runs until October. I intend to convert to an ancestry visa, to which II am entitled on
the basis of my grandfather being born here. I have booked an
appointment to do this in Toronto after my course ends. However, I am concerned that I will not be granted this visa while I still have my
student visa. I am trying to determine whether visas can be granted to
start at a future date (after my current student visa expires) or
whether I can cancel my student visa before I return to Canada or
while I am in Canada at a British consulate or embassy. If anyone has any information on this or knows who I could contact (been trying UK government and have received no love and a lot of frustration), that would be incredibly helpful. Thanks

Did you ever get a definite answer to this? I am currently doing something similar – finished course and returned home to apply for PSW, even though my student Visa is still good until mid-Nov. I emailed the UK Border Agency in the UK before I left and they said I didn't need to cancel my student one, and the immigration advisers at the school said the same thing.... but am still a bit concerned it may cause unneccessary delays/complications (maybe a bit paranoid!)
