Visiting BF for 3 Months?

Post Fri Jan 04, 2008 11:10 am

I lost my job in Dec and I've not had any success in getting a new one. My boyfriend that lives in NC suggested I come visit him for 3 months and then I can return to Canada and look for a job then (really hard to get a job after Christmas here).

I'd have to give up my appartment because of the lease agreement, but could change my address to my sister or my parents (I'd also be staying with them when I got back until I found another appartment).

I know US border wants proof of ties to Canada. My stuff would all be in storage, along with my car. Would receipts of that be enough cause to come back? And also, the most important one, my daughter would not be travelling with me. She'd be staying with my parents and her dad. If I brought a copy of her Birth Certificate and the receipts I mentioned along with a round trip ticket would that be enough?

Any advice and tips on border crossing would be appreciated.

I'm not so sure that showing receipts for a storage facility is enough "proof of ties" for CBP. I'd even guess to say that it would have the exact opposite affect you'd be hoping for.

How long were you employed before you got fired/layed off? Did they give you a severance package? Do you have enough funds in the bank and cash in your pocket to support your 3 month trip? (bank cards and credit cards are not accepted as proof that you have money, they usually want to see cash, and they don't want to hear that your boyfriend will be supporting you during your stay, you have to be self supporting).

And they may or may not consider that your daughter is still there as ties to Canada. They may well consider that your boyfriend in the US is a stronger tie to the US than your daughter is to Canada. They can be really really nasty.

If you can get someone to sub-let your apartment while you plan to be away, that may be better so you can keep your name on a lease and utility bills. You'd of course have to clear that with your landlord, and write up a separate lease agreement for the sub-let, but it may be better than a storage garage. People walk out on those agreements all the time.

You could go as a tourist, but as Reba said you will definitely want to have proof that you have the funds to support yourself while you are there. I never carry cash either, but recent bank statement will suffice as well.
