Visiting USA

Post Thu Oct 25, 2007 4:54 am

I was just wondering if anyone could answer my question. I've been traveling for a couple of years now around the world and have left myself in a bind. I've let my passport go without renewing it, thinking i would go back to Canada and renew in person. But i need to go to the United States before then. I'll have a month of validity on my passport left when i arrive there. The question is will they allow me to enter the country with only a month on my passport left.

Maybe not. They usually require that your passport is valid for at least 6 months at time of travel. But, you may get away with it if you also bring your birthcertificate and driver's license.

Thanks for your reply Ms.Reba. I think i'm just gonna fear and get my airline ticket and see what happens. Is North Carolina treating you good?

My son entered the US with two months remaining on his passport. I think it depends on who you get at border patrol.

Fore entry into US as vistor, the passport need only be valid, not with any specific time left on it.

sort of a related question to the OP

I have dual Canadian & British citizenship.

I also want to visit the US by road crossing at Niagara falls, the problem is that I cannot find my Canadian passport (which has expired anyway). I have no intention of getting another Canadian passport at this time simply to visit the US

I am permanently resident in Canada & my ID consists of a current valid British passport, my very old Canadian citizenship card, my Ontario drivers license & health card & other proof of my ties in Canada?

What if any issues or problems am I likely to encounter at the US bridge border crossing - could I be refused entry even if I am day tripping over - if so, why?

And if I am let in, how does the CBP log or track my entry?

Then what happens when I return back across the border - what will the CBSA likely grill me on?
Disclaimer: I am not an immigration expert & anything that I post on visa & immigration is based soley on more than 30 years of personal experience & interaction with the UKBA & Home office.

There is a problem: As a Cdn, you require nothing but passport to visit US. However, absent a Cdn passport, you will need to carry your UK passport. UK citizens fall under the Visa waiver program (which means you don't need a visa), but also subjects you to ESTA.

This, the problem with having only british passport is that you may fall under the ESTA program, whereby those not requiring visas, must pre-register and pay a fee.

See, Cdns are exempt from ESTA, but Cdns are also required to show their passport. It would be up to the CBP if they would admit you "as a Cdn" rather than a UK citizen.

Your best bet is to follow up with ESTA. Your question will be: Is a Cdn citizen with a British passport considered Cdn or British? if cdn you are good to go. If british, you will need to do ESTA.
