Want to move to Germany

Post Fri Jan 27, 2012 9:32 pm

Hi there!
I'm thinking about moving to Germany from Canada in a couple of years.
I am wondering if you can give your opinion on few subjects...
1. How do you generally like the climate there? I'm thinking more about southern part of the country (Bayern etc)
2. How hard to find a skilled job from Canada? I'm working in IT, so I'm thinking about finding a job in Germany and move there with a work visa.
3. How is it usually going with prolonging the documents/visa after a year or two? Is there any progress with Blue card and stuff?
4. How you usually treated by Germans?
5. Are there any benefits of being a Canadian to get there or live in there?
Id' really appreciate any information or experience you can share. Thanks!

1. The climate is between -10°C to 5 °C in winter, and 25°C to 32°C in summer. It depends where you live in Bavarian (near the Alps or in the nothern flat part of Bavarian). You can have snow in the cities till spring or got already 10°C.

2. Make sure you have international acknowlege certifications. Usually, the Germans have a appreantship or a university degree.

3.

4. Learn to speak German. The younger Germans can speak English, but in the supermarket or at lunch with co-workers you should speak German.

5. I don't think there are benefit for foreign workers. Maybe your employer can sponsor you, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I see. But do you like it general? I wonder if winter is long and summer is short, like in many parts of Canada, or it's different? I don't like winter too much.
Concerning Bavaria, for example, where is more warm - Nurenberg (more flat part) or Munchen (closer to Alps)?

Ok, but I'm more concern about chances to find a job for non-EU foreigner in this area?

Sorry, didn't get - you have nothing to say concerning 3. or text just vanished?

Yeah, I thought so. What about the acceptance of foreigners in general? Did you encountered any acts of racism or something?

I thought more like some a bit easier getting work visa for Canadians in compare to more 3rd world countries or something like that...

1. The summer in Germany are long. You can say, it is a very warm weather from May to October (like in 2011). Just take a look to the weather forcast.

2. Just as I said. With your national certications from Canada, it will be hard to find a job. Because of its incompareble. If you have an international known cerfitication, your employer can compare you with a German applicant. By the way, the German apprenticeship has a high standard in Germany.

3. check the website of http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/EN/EinreiseUndAufenthalt/LernenUndArbeiten/ArbeiteninD_node.html

4. There isn't much racism. Just a few crazy people who live mostly in the eastern parts of Germany. But in Bavarian are most of the US troops and everybody likes them.

5. I don't think you have a better chance for the necessary VISA, because everybody has the same rights in Germany. If you have the "right" charisma to the person who serves you at the VISA bureau, it would perhaps easier.
