Hi girl! I'm new to the site too. My dad came from Canada to
Brazil and we've lived here for more than 20 years in the south of
Brazil.
Salvador is a big capital and was initially colonized by African slaves, who today constitute majority of population. It is a nice city full of nice people, but as I know a bit from Canadians, don't expect sanitation or cleanliness - I can tell you that if you can let go of some stuff (as being obsessed with "safe meals") and allow yourself to have fun, you'll have the time of your life.
My husband has family in Fortaleza, but that's a bit far from
Salvador. However, you could easily stay at a pousada, which is a very cheap option of bed and breakfast for us. Our currency is the Brazilian Real, which is cheaper than the Canadian Dollar, but bring US dollars when you come. Credit cards are taken quite a lot - I honestly think you'll have a great time.
