A lot will depend on your age, because it is very difficult to find work in France and more so if you barely speak the language. If you are retired it is slightly easier providing your country has a pension’s agreement with France. For Europeans there are standard agreements in place, but for Canadians it might be slightly different, so you might want to check that out first. Equally if you are thinking of working in France you should find out the current regulations.
One thing you should be aware of is the ‘Napoleonic Law’ which governs inheritance issues. Basically you cannot disinherit your children (even if you don’t like em). This can be tricky for second marriages etc. Even if a will is in place, this will be overruled if disputed by next of kin. Inheritance tax is also high (up to 60% + now) and should be taken into consideration although Mr. Sarcosy has promised to do something about that.
Apart from all of that, France is a wonderful place to live and I can thoroughly recommend it.
