What can I bring? -Teacher moving to US through VIF program

Postby aduncan365 » Mon Dec 01, 2008 7:58 am

Hi everyone,
I'm applying with Visiting International Faculty program that places teachers in US schools (mostly North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia) on a J-1 Visa as a cultural exchange. They are looking for a 2 yr commitment. I'm looking forward to moving to North Carolina :)
I'd like to know about driving my own car down and what I can bring with me. The recruiters have said that most Canadians do drive down but I haven't been able to get in touch with anyone who has yet.
Ideally I'd like to treat it like I'm moving house and just go down with a big U-Haul truck full of stuff and 1 very fat cat.
Does anyone know how easy it is to do this? And what do I have to do with car?
Thanks

Personal effects are duty-free so you simply need a list of what you're bringing with you, that's pretty much it unless you're taking down controlled goods like alcohol, drugs, firearms, etc. You need proof of a rabies shot for the cat I think.

Cars being taken in for more than a year need to be formally imported. There is no duty, anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong.
Steve.
