Hello all! I'm planning on starting my MBA in Texas in January, and I'll probably be on a student visa. I have heard there are two types, but I don't know the difference between 'em.

My Q to you all is, what work can I do with a student visa, if at all? I've heard something about 20 hours/week or something.

Can I acquire a real estate license and get into that?

And how easy would you all say it is to get a job and subsequently a TN visa (In the Dallas-Ft. Worth area if it helps)? I have a BBA in marketing.

Thanks a lot!

HIya loybond.

When I had a student visa in the states, I was able to work up to 25 hours a week, but it could only be on campus (for the school). Thus all the Canadians and other foreigners had the crap jobs in the cafeteria and janitorial work. Good times Smile You are (or were) able to extend you student visa one year in order to work in your field of study after you graduated OR you could work for a year during your studies. Seemed to make more sense to work for a year after and then move on the the TN visa. (Though things may have changed since I was last in the states).

For info on the TN Visa, try this:

(Not recommending those companies, just the info)

So it IS possible to find work in my field after I finish my MBA, eh? Is there a 25 hour limit on that too?

If things are still the same (which is seems they are), you can extend your student visa one year to work in your related field full-time.

Dunno if an MBA falls into one of the categories for the TN visa. My employer had to plead my case for me as Social Worker was on the TN list (and my degree was Social Work), but my job title was Youth Treatment Specialist proving that my duties were indeed that of a social worker.

It's a tricky business. Good luck!

I think I might be able to squeeze into "management consultant" even with my BBA.

How do you like London? I used to visit there every year, but I've spent the last 3 years in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This experience has made me do something I never thought would happen - miss home!
