What Do I Need To Apply For A UK Ancestry Visa?

Post Sat Jan 19, 2008 1:07 pm

I'm looking into this for my boyfriend who's mother has been 'helping' with the visa application to get to england.

He's currently been told by his mother that he needs Birth Certs of BOTH his english grandparents, Both his parents and his own, Along with bank statements for 3 months and a mortgage or tennancy agreement for a home in the UK.

We have managed to get the birth certificates, but are sceptical as to if the rest of the information is correct. Anything else we will need to get would be greatly appreciated.

Also what is the average waiting period for an ancestral visa?

Hi!

You can find the majority of the publically available information about the ancestry visa here:

http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front ... 8721067684

As for your questions you don't need both birth certificates only the birth certificate for the grandparent you are claiming through. So for instance say I was claiming through my grandfather. I would need my grandfather's original birth certificate, the orginal long form birth certificate for the parent born of the aforementioned grandparent, and My long form birth certificate.

However the more information you provide the better and it can't hurt to send as much information in as you can.

It's highly unlikely you will be able to get a tenancy agreement while living in canada and even if you do I would be very careful about the type of property you rent because some can *seem* nice at first but turn out to be dodgy as hell. I don't believe a tenancy agreement is required but you should check the link above to see if you need it.

The instance in which you would absolutely require one is if someone were sponsering you ( or your boyfriend ) in their visa application. You would need your sponsor's tennancy agreement along with a form filled out by your sponsor proving that you would have accommodation within the uk upon arrival.

You do not *need* three months worth of bank statements to apply, you will however need to prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself for up to three months. Unfortunately this figure can be subjective so I can't give you an exact amount of money you need to have in your bank account when you submit your app. You can submit this in the form of a bank statement or a leter from your bank stating that you are a client of good standing and have so much money in your bank account.

You may however need three months of bank statements and / or pay slips to help you set up a bank account once you arrive in the uk. Proving you have a reliable track record can help a great deal with that.

The turn around time on visas as I understand it is quite reasonable provided all the information you have sent in is correct and straightforward. I the time I believe at the moment seems to be coming in at about one week for confirmation ( whether you have been accepted or denied ) and two weeks to have your visa back in hand.

Remember the more information you send in to support your case the better, just make sure you are including all of the information that they are asking for.

Good luck :)

Glad to help :)

Don't know much about bringing pets over as I've never been in a position to do that however mari-mac says in this thread :

http://www.canuckabroad.com/forums/thre ... t2840.html

that it's possible to get a pet passport of some sort, I think you guys will need to do a bit of research if you want to do this. I think it can be expensive so you'll need to decide whether you can afford it / whether it's worth it.

I'm in a bit of a similar situation. Except on the other side of it. I'm applying for an ancestry visa to move in with my British boyfriend. :) Was over on a WHM visa and decided to come back to canada and apply for an ancestry one so I'd have more options.

I've looked into shipping and all the options seem to cost rather alot. so I'm basically taking over essentials shipping some small things, and leaving the majority of my things with my parents in canada.

I'll gradually bring stuff over but I don't really own anything I can't live without.

The cost of shipping furniture seems roughly equitable to just buying it, so we've decided to just buy what new items we need as we need them. :)

I wish we had that option! His parents have 'decided' theyre moving countries in a month too so we're kind of stuck really. Especially since you can only bring one case when flying (or are you allowed more if your actually moving?)

The pets bits not too expensive, but hes not had her have any shots or anything so he has to pay a good few hundred dollars for getting her up to date! I figured it would make him happy so it's worth it in the end.

its weird to see so many uk-canada relationships! Im the only one long distance in my whole college :smt024

Some airlines will allow you to have more than one item of baggage for long haul flights others won't it pays to shop around a bit. Sometimes it's even cheaper to buy a return ticket than a one way ticket . it really pays to keep searching.

Most airlines will allow you to have any number of bags as long as the weight does not exceed the amount they have set.

I think continental will allow two bags that are 23kg each whereas some of the canadian airlines will only allow one bag of 20 kg. So just shop around and see what suits you guys.

I think you can ship things a couple of ways, you can send it by cargo in which case it would be in a container and shipped over seas. If you can't fill a container i think you can share them but you have to wait for someone else to want to ship to the same location. Another option is to look at moving companies but they will likely charge an arm and a leg as well. :(

When I was in london the last time, there was a free magazine which is available at some hotels and various stands through out the city which caters to the ex pat community. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it right now but it's possible you can find one. It has tons of ads for moving companys in it.

Bummer about his parents moving as well. it's going to make things that much more difficult to organize. You can only do what you can do though. :-)

The airlines do tend to only let it be around 23 yeah, unfortunatly he managed to go over that with one case last time he visited! I suggested just going over the limit and paying the fine since it would be cheaper than the shipping of his things!

We just werent sure about if it was worth shipping because all he wants to bring is Cd's, clothes, books and then his ps3 and games (which im currently trying to convince him isnt worth it as it wont play UK bought games anyway)

His parents moving doesn't make much difference really other than not having someone back in canada - they were already making things difficult as they dont want him to go :(

Lol he sounds a bit like me, I'm going to be packing my dvd player and all my dvd's in a case without the boxes. which might be an idea for him, just because it saves on space if not weight. My boy friend is game obsessed so there really isn't any need for me to bring over any of my systems.

You can get by with very little. I learned that when I did the whole back packing around europe, but there's the whole comfort thing in having familiar items and things with you. If he can afford it he should bring whatever he can over, ship some stuff bring others.

If you do go over the limit and have to pay a find make sure none of the bags are over 30 kg, just because they will likely refuse to take them because it can violate the baggage handlers agreement for them to move any item which weighs that much.

I think the only way you will be able to convince him to give up his ps3 is if he had a uk one when he's over there. It doesn't really matter that the games won't play because he can always import the games if he wants to.

Yeah, unfortunatly we cant afford ps3's :( Im not even in a full time job yet (im only 17 n still in school) so its all going to be pretty rushed once he gets here.
Turns out his mums offered to pay shipping, but after everything shes done to mess this up so far, i just dont trust her to actually pay it >-<

Wow sounds like you've done a lot with your life, its cool. Where did you backpack?

We're going to actually apply for his visa on friday (assuming this birth certificate from torronto ever comes through) so hopefully it will be all good news. We have a booked plane ticket and a move date now, June 29th! :)

Here is a website to help your boyfriend out with his cat. It's what I've been going by for the past couple of months.

NOTE: MOST OF THIS STUFF HAS TO BE DONE 6 MONTHS IN ADVANCE AT LEAST. After the cat gets the rabies shot, DO NOT get the tenser shot (rabies test) until at least 6 weeks AFTER the rabies shot. My vet helped me with that part.

Make sure you read through the site thoroughly. There are PDF's that you should print off as well. It's all helped me so far. and I'm hoping for the best. Good luck!

defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm

(I'm not allowed to post a web site. I hope that works. I'm just trying to help.)
