What Do I Need to Do to Get My Personal Belongings?

Post Mon May 04, 2009 9:12 am

I moved back to Toronto from NY in January. I left some of my clothes and personal belongings with a friend. I didn't fill out a b4 form when I came back. I'm planning on picking some of my things up and the rest I am going to have shipped to me. What do I need to do regarding customs etc.?

Thanks for your help.

Which customs, Canada? Probably nothing, its all personal goods of a re-patriating citizen. Unless you have antiques that you bought while living in the US worth more than $10,000, it should all be duty and tax free to ship it home.

Any customs documents that are required should be readily available at the shipping company, whether you use a courier, or a moving company.

You normally have to declare any new items you bought while you were away when you first return to reside in Canada. Officially, it seems that you cannot do it later. However, it looks like a lot of people neglect to do that. Canada Customs may be nice and accomodate your situation. You should drop by their office and ask what you can do. If those are items you bought in Canada, or if you previously imported them to Canada, then there may not be a problem with with it.
