What interview questions will US employers ask Canadians?

Post Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:30 pm

What are some of the interviews questions US employers will ask people from Canada, because they usually know little about Canada?

1. About your previous employer, e.g. what is Bell Canada? What is TD?

2. About your industry in Canada, e.g. Tell me about the Telecom/IT industry in Canada; Tell me about the banking industry in Canada

what other questions have you been asked before?

If you're applying for a job with a US bank and the interviewer asks "what is TD?", politely ask them if they've heard of Google and then get up and leave. If an employer is asking "What is Bell Canada?" then that's probably not someone you want to work for. Have you actually had an interview like that before?

You know, quite honestly, Americans think of Canada as "just another state", well, almost. You can't expect them to know about a Canadian business - and so if they're asking about some business you previously worked for, it is fair for them to ask you those questions. You would get that in Canada if you moved from coast to coast.

They are really more concerned about work experience, attitude, work ethic etc. I wouldn't sweat them asking about a certain company/ industry as there is no difference really and you can very politely tell them that.
