What is the NVQ Levels equivilant to?

Post Mon Oct 17, 2011 6:29 am

I am a child care worker and a support worker for special needs kids in Canada. I am having a hard time trying to figure out what the UK "National Vocational Qualifications" Levels are eqivilant to with my school diploma's.
I have read about all 5 levels, but I just need clarification so I can add it to my resume/ CV

The following is approximate levels & general guideline

-NVQ2 = Grade 12 High school (H/S) diploma (general level) that would get you into a 1st year college program

-NVQ2 = you have a trade or vocational qualification & are trained/certified in that skill & practising it, such as a Hairdresser, a qualifed/trained admin assistant, a skilled and qualified day-care child worker, horticulturalist, a mechanic, electrician, plumber or someone that fixes things etc

-NVQ3 = Grade 12/13 advanced level H/S diploma (for university entrance), or a two year Canadian college diploma (1500+hrs of classroom time)

-NVQ 4 = Three year (Full-Time) Canadian college diploma (2400 hrs approx of classroom time) or completion of 2-years of a University degree

-NVQ 5 = Honours degree - that may include Masters level, depending on the degree type

-NVQ 5/6 = Those with a Professional designation/qualification at Masters level with a minimum skill set, such as or similar to an accountant, engineer, lawyer, MSW with designation,
a college principal/head, a police chief/fire chief of a large city that also has a degree.

MIRBZY, for the specific skill, qualification or work metioned in the OP that you do - open the link below, this may help you see what comparable level you're at

The left side bar in that link may also help you view UK style CV's or positions/agencies

Those with a provincial high school graduation diploma generally fall into two categories

Ones that are at the general level (that gets them into a college program), the other, the advanced/honours diploma at university entrance level [based on marks & subjects] & the degree they are gong to undertake

The following is a geneal guideline of UK to Canadian school levels & qualifications

http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk ... grades.htm

GCSE (grades D-G) = Canadian grade 10

GCSE (grades C) = Canadian grade 11 general

GCSE (grade A-B) = Canadian grade 11 advance/honours stream - or grade 12 general (depending on marks & subjects)

AS' = Canadian grade 12 general (average marks above 80%)

A-Levels = Canadian grade 12/13 academic/advanced level (marks above 70%) for university entrance, again depending on the subjects & discipline

On the older qualifications

GCE 'O' level = Canadian grade 12 graduation diploma (SSGD)

GCE 'A' level (university entrance level) = Canadian grade 12 advance/honours stream or grade 13 (Ontario) honours graduation diploma (OAC or the SSHGD)
