What! NO CBC, Global, CTV in the USA

Post Tue Feb 27, 2007 12:44 pm

Ok why is it that we have all the american channels in Canada, but not even 1 canadian channel in the USA, not even if I want to pay for it (nothing on cable or dishnet. nothing). Why is that? I blame canadian tv companies for part of the reason, because they don't push hard enough to get their content out to the americans. I know tons of american who love canadian programming. they think its better quality shows. or atleast that what I convience them. Anyway. CBC if your listening. I want MR. Dressup in the USA! oh and muchmusic too!

Heya,

Thought I replied to this, guess I didn't!

A friend of mine had a US satellite and got one station that happened to play a lot of Canadian content, like almost explusively. I can't think of the name of his provider though.

I was shocked at the amount of Canadian tv when I lived in europe. For example the outdoor sports channel. Almost any program about snowboarding, mountain biking, etc was all Canadian. And there was another one that played a bunch of shows from Life network and stuff.

So keep your eyes open.you might come across something!

there's actually quite a lot of Canadian programming on in the US, just not all in one place.

PBS plays some, Outdoor Living, Discovery, HGTV, etc etc etc. A lot of the Canadian DIY and design shows, Discovery Science stuff, Shopping Bags.

What I haven't seen is stuff like Corner Gas, but it may be on satelite. You can get CTV Newsworld on satelite in the US.

I understand what you mean showgun. How I long for Coronation Street, Fifth Estate - geez, I'd even be happy with the news!

If you really need your fix of Hockey Night in Canada, you can get a slingbox (google it) . It allows you to stream TV over the Internet from another part of the world.

Have a friend install it up in Canada, and you can stream Canadian TV to your computer. My friend, who lives in San Diego, had his cousin in Vancouver install the Slingbox. Now he can watch Canadian hockey with Canadian commentators!

Ingredients:

1 Slingbox
1 Friend
1 Broadband Internet Connection
1 Computer

Unless you want to watch the same channels as your friend does, your friend should have two cable hookups.

Enjoy!

Wish we had the broadband here in our Alaskan home. We have the same problem not being able to receive any Alaskan stations, or often even Alaskan radio. Who cares about L.A.? My biggest gripe is the goofy trade agreements preventing Americans from tasting Canadian chocolate such as Aero bars. Try to resist as I might, I spend the first 24 hours in Canada under the near influence of sugar-mania from over-indulgence on chocolate digestive biscuits etc. I'll never get used to Hershey's bars!

The slingbox sounds interesting. BUT if I were to get it installed in my parents place in Saskatoon (im in DC area) Would I just be watching whatever they were currently watching on TV, OR could I watch whatever I wanted to, and NOT affect what they are watching? I dont see that anywhere on Slingbox's home website!

You would be watching whatever device you connected the slingbox to. If you want to watch your own channels, you need to connect it to a second cablebox.

You could subscribe to Bell ExpressVu at a Canadian address and set it up in the US depending on your location. Of course this is illegal in Bell's eyes though.

hey flames, what the hell are you doin' over here? :D

If your parents have 2 cable boxes, they could watch whatever they want on their primary TV, and then I think you can watch whatever you want from the second one.

But then if they decide to watch separate programmes in opposite rooms, then you're watching whatever is being watched on the secondary box, whether you want to or not. Which is apt to happen in a two TV family. ;)
