what visa to apply for?

Post Wed Dec 09, 2009 7:54 pm

Hello,
I'm new to all this and overwhelmed with information.
Here is my situation:
My girlfriend is Australian and I intend on applying for a visa to move there (temporarily)
from what i gather i have several options, and I'm not sure how to go about it.
I'm 27yrs old and have about 6-7 years of experience as a theater manager/district manager. 2 years experience working as import coordinator for a steamship line (which has an office in Melbourne as well)
Here are some questions that i have:
what is the best, most reliable way to go about my application:

working holiday visa?
are my skills worth a "working visa"?
which one do i apply for first?

I also own property here in Montreal. Does that ease my application?
and last, we will be getting engaged during her visit in Montreal this winter.

Thank you for any advice!

Well at a first guess I'd say your skills won't be on the lists that they would need to be in order to go for a PR visa. You'd have to check at the Immigration Australia website though to check.

A working holiday visa is obviously an option as you're under 30 although that would only allow you to stay for a year (could possibly get 2).

How long have you and your girlfriend been together? Have you lived together at all? A prospective marriage visa might be the best option, it depends how quickly you want to get married though.

The working holiday visa will be the fastest and simplest to process. If an Australian company is willing to sponsor you to come then that is the best way - but there's not a lot of that recently due to the economy.
