When can I enter US under TN Status?

I will be starting a position on July 31st but need to head down early so that I can find an apartment etc. I have booked a flight for July 3rd. Will I be able to obtain my TN Status at this time? ...

None of the airports will allow this since you need an airline ticket just to get into pre-clearance. The ticket needs to be for that day.

Chris,

When I said in advance at the airport, I mean flying down to the state two weeks before start date and as well apply it at the pre-clearance.

We have had many TN/TDs and all but one expired one year less a day from the day we crossed the border, however, the last one was dated to expire one year plus 3 days later using the date on the TN request letter (we don't use an actual offer letter but a special TN request letter drawn up with all the necessary components). I asked about the extra time and the officer said that they could include some travel time at their discretion.

They usually tell you you have to start working once you enter the U.S.
