You said in your original post you'd been on OPT for 3 months. It becomes invalid after 90 days if you're unemployed (how USCIS discovers this is an interesting question, but that's the law). I can't find the DHS blurb on it but this covers it: http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/OIE/f ... detail.pdf on page 2.

Bear in mind that Canadian work experience counts for a lot more in the US than if you got it say, in China and you have a US degree as well. Plus it is a valid TN-1 category as well, so those are the things you have going for you.

Frankly given the 90-day limitation, I wouldn't even bother with trying to use OPT for the actual job if you can find one, use it to look for work and then go for TN-1 straight away.

But I'm afraid trying to find work as a foreign student in the middle of a recession is no simple task.

Considering the forum is for tourism and travellers specifically and NOT for immigration issues, I think we're being rather more than helpful.

Too funny, you already have many "wise replies!! I wonder, if maybe your attitude has anything to do with not getting a job? nah, that can't be it!

My attitude HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with my difficulties in finding employment. My annoyance is purely with the repetitive answers in this forum. Try again darling...Oh and....your sarcasm is hardly classy. I would come up with a new gimmick. Thanks sweetie :D

by toronto5481 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 10:13 am Look, things are what they are. The people on this forum are knowledgeable and ARE helping by giving you the straight dope. I read this forum regularly but never really post. I felt compeled to reply when I read what you said... This forum IS extremely useful.

Thanks for being compelled. I wish this same attitude of feeling "compelled" would come faster when people needed some REAL advice on this forum. Telling me to go back to Canada for experience because its better is not as simple as it sounds.

And for Steven and Reba saying that my OPT expires after 90 days without employment, is ABSOLUTELY FALSE. I can attest to this as I was an International student worker at the school I attended for 2 years and have come face to face with many international students who were in their 7 months of OPT who opted for an internship instead because of the difficulties of finding work. This was at the advice of the INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DIRECTOR who I've worked under. You OPT expires along with your status according to your I-94, I-20 and OPT card. So I KNOW I'm still within my right to be here.

**Sigh** :doubt:

Not sure why you're getting frustrated with the people who are responding to your original post when they are trying to help you. "**Sigh**ing" and telling people that their answers are "unoriginal" or "repetitive" is not a great way to get people to help you, as a newcomer to this forum. If you don't like what people have to say here, I suggest you try posting your question on a different forum. Good luck with your job search.

I said no such thing. I know nothing about OPT whatsoever.

If you want immigration information, go to an immigration forum. If you want jobs information, go to a jobs forum.

Canuck Abroad was specifically intended to be a place for Canadians who are travelling abroad to get information about where to stay, how to get there, and maybe meet up with other Canucks Abroad.

Sorry we're not what we thought you were. Life's like that.

Steven,

It's actually 90 days post OPT. So the 90 days starts after the 1 year OPT is completed.

But your link was useful in that I did not know one actually had the 90 days after OPT, I thought one had to leave immediately.

thanks

Communicating factors between sevis and the International Student Director allow for other alternatives for the student in the event the 90 days have approached and they still have not gained employment. I've learned a lot while working at the school. There are LEGAL ways around things. I'm waaaaayyy ahead of you on that one. Thanks anyways. :)

Sweetie. I never break a sweat when it comes to these things. Who said anything about being frustrated? I'm sighing because people don't know how to take honesty lightly. I guess that's human nature.

Well, I've said what I had to say. I can't be broken and I don't give up. I realize sometimes it takes a huge burst of positive energy to weigh out the negative. The answers couldn't come quick enough when I mentioned the answers were "unoriginal" ...Again, that's human nature. My job search will be well rewarded once I find a job so I'm not worried. I've already won so any further comments will be disregarded as I have no regard for negativity.
Thanks and blessings! =D>

Hi Jelisa, even though you mentioned you will not be commenting any further, I hope you at least read my comment. I'm not here to bash you but give you some advice which in this case "I hope is original". LOL

You should visit the Non profit companies in person and let them know you're interested in finding work as a career counselor. Even if its part time. Ask them if they're willing to do a trial run with you to see how well you work in that type of environment. My husband is seeking part time teaching at a college also here in Florida and he made connections by visiting the schools career departments. He gave them his credentials and one school may consider him. So we're keeping our fingers crossed. One person posted looking for employment in other states. Honestly, that is true. Being willing to relocate will make the job hunt a little easier and will allow you to keep your options open. Please go to networking events. I've also done that and its not a bad thing. Who knows, you may run into the right person. So keep your head up and don't get so stressed out. You will find what you're looking for you just have to be a little patient. Here is a link to some Non profits in Florida http://www.careercounselingcenters.com/

You yourself said in an earlier post that you were getting "annoyed with the repetitive answers" in this forum. That suggests some degree of frustration with what you're reading here (in other words, people aren't telling you what you want to hear, and instead of accepting that, you are chastising people for having "repetitive" or "unoriginal" answers).

JelisaS wrote:My job search will be well rewarded once I find a job so I'm not worried. I've already won so any further comments will be disregarded as I have no regard for negativity.

Your childishness and immaturity is quite evident. I'm not sure what exactly it is that you claim to have won, since this is a forum, not a contest. Acting like a child is not going to get you anywhere with the people on this forum and it most certainly will not get you anywhere in your job search (or in your life).

I certainly hope that we never hear from you again. The rest of us will be better off, believe me.

By the way, I am not, nor will I ever be your "sweetie."
