Where are all the jobs?

Post Wed Jun 10, 2009 5:35 pm

Hello my fellow Canucks,

I'm new to this forum and am glad I stumbled upon it.

I recently moved from Orlando to Miami. I'm an international student who studied Sociology @ The University of Central Florida. I'm a recent graduate on OPT and realize the recession is weighing down heavily on the jobs and employment. I really want to help people and am looking to do Social Work, Counseling or Career Counseling. Time is ticking as I've been on OPT for 3 months and still cannot find work. It's really frustrating and if I can't find work, then I'll try and see what my hometown (Vancouver) has to offer. Is there anyone who is in the same field or similar on this forum who have found jobs under the TN or H1-B category? I really want to get my feet wet and am looking for some suggestions. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

Anybody know of any recruitment agencies that specialize in those fields?

Thanks guys!

Oh, oh...I've tried all those H1base sites that help foreigners but still nothing. I'm really losing hope but refuse to give up!

Wouldn't the school where you got your degree have some sort of job counselling or placement programme?

One thing you might want to look at, to avoid the time pressure. Non-profits are quota exempt so if you can get into a non-profit doing the work you want to do, then its fine. You can get that anytime, from anywhere in the world.

That's an excellent suggestion but a lot of the non profits I've applied to have hiring freezes right now. I've done volunteer work for most of them and have gained experience but now I'm looking into making it a profession. There is only so much volunteer work you can do. If you have any info on any non profits I may have missed let me know.

It's a bit tough now, but what I meant is there should not be any time PRESSURE as you can always apply for a TN at any TIME. Of course you need a profession...but i would'nt worry about the time.

I hate to pour cold water on this one, but getting a decent job in Florida is hard if you have experience and the economy is good, which isn't the case. My suggestion would be to move back to Canada, get some experience and apply for TN-1 possibly at a later date when the economy has improved a bit and you have more on your resumé.

I would like to gain some MORE experience here in Florida while my OPT is still active. The economy in Canada is not the greatest either although it's not as bad as the U.S. Please don't take this the wrong way but I've read a lot of other posts mentioning to "move back to Canada if you can't find a job in the U.S." and it's becoming a little cliche. There is a reason why a lot of us Canadians are here in the U.S. and despite the rift in the economy, there are still ways to make it work here in the job market. If I wanted to move back to Canada, I would have packed my bags already.

I think this forum could be useful if the suggestions were a little more original. Like I said before, if ANYONE has a wise suggestion they could give me, I would appreciate it very much. :D

Look, things are what they are. The people on this forum are knowledgeable and ARE helping by giving you the straight dope. I read this forum regularly but never really post. I felt compeled to reply when I read what you said... This forum IS extremely useful. Because of the wonderful people on here, I became fluent in immigration jargon, and was able to lend a job in the US, on a TN. I know what TN implies, what it doesnt etc. Thanks to this fantastic forum, I did not need the help of a lawyer, and was WELL-prepared for my border interview. I knew my stuff (what to say, what not to say, how to handle anything thanks again, to this forum).

Steven is so right. Florida is a highly sought after place to live in. When the economy is great, they still give preference to US citizens for jobs (and why wouldn't they, it's their country after all!)
I was a new grad too last year and made my own luck by networking and am now gainfully and happily working and living in the US. Finding a job in the US is not easy when you're Canadian. Never mind in this economy, or in Florida of all places.
Do you realize how many Americans are unemployed right now? I have friends who are Americans, engineers and unemployed...

If you truly want to work in the US, then Florida may not be the best place. You may have to move out of state and go to a less popular place. Apply across the country and see what turns up. As the saying goes, "go where you're wanted"

I definitely encourage you to follow your dreams, as I followed mine. But you have to be realistic about it, and be willing to take the side door if needed.

Just dont come on this board to say people on here are not "original". FYI, there aren't 1000 ways to get jobs...And the best way has always been networking and using (or making your own) connections.

Too funny, you already have many "wise replies!! I wonder, if maybe your attitude has anything to do with not getting a job? nah, that can't be it!
