Where employment is to acquire visa!

I agree with the taxes being much lower therefore making it easier to live in the U.S comfortably.

Taxes in Toronto are horrendous and this is actually part of the reason I jumped ship. Someone I know who was on social assistance made more money than me per month while I slaved 40 to 50 hours per week just for the Ontario gov't to slice my check in half and give away to her among others... No good

It's nice to know when you can finally make it on your own. It sucks that you have to relocate to a different COUNTRY to have a better life.

Your tax money is going to the same coffers as back home in Canada, and yet here in the US, as an immigrant, you have fewer government benefits for yourself to show for your hard work.

Gods forbid if you ever get sick here in the US with an ongoing disease, or even a catastrophic car accident.

All depends how you look at it. Me, I had a better life in Canada.

[/quote90 day mark

90 days? I might be mistaken but i had an OPT valid for a year or so but that was decade ago

Depends where your looking for a job if its IT/ Consulting/ERP and anything related like procurement etc

go to
Dice.com
Monster.com
computerjobs.com
hotjobs.com

The job market overall is ok its not as bad at it seems, with all the Tarp money, Govt jobs are on the rise, however i am seeing a lot of jobs in sales, starting usually is 34-38K but then you get a residual which can be pretty decent.

Good luck to your friend.

I would say a contiguous State, such as Washington, but all States are going through budget cutbacks at the moment so social services might be tough unless he wants to work for minimum wage at the unemployment dept.

According to the DOL the States that are in the best shape are the rural western States, i.e. Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota because they have little overhead and they get a lot of revenue from oil and gas.

Yes 90 days is all you have to find employment while on OPT if not it will become invalid after that time period. I always suggested to students to work for an employment agency and do a few odd jobs while seeking their "dream job".

In regards to the taxes.. Sorry I beg to differ. The Ontario gov't slandered my paycheck biweekly when I was at my last job before moving to the U.S. So for ex: If my paycheck was $1100.00 for 40 hours, I took home no more than $800.00 This use to piss me off so bad. When tax year came in 2006, my return was a grand total of $200.00

And Hi Steven nice to see you on here again. I thought Washington would be good to for my family member so he is exploring all avenues without completely ruling out Toronto. I guess time will tell eventually.
