Where employment is to acquire visa!

Hey all,

Which state is best to seek employment for H1B or TN visa? I mentioned to a family member of mine from Canada that it's best to try "populus" (if I spelled that right) states such as NY, Illinois or Texas. I didn't mention Florida because there aren't very many jobs here in my opinion. Where have you guys found it easier to secure employment in the U.S? He is currently on OPT so it would be nice if he found work before the 90 day mark. Field of study is in social sciences so it would be social work.. etc *I think*

Also, what happened to lawsrlaws and steven to name a few.. I miss the different variety of answers and opinions on this board.. :(

Any feedback would be great.. Thanks

Best place to look for a job is places where there are jobs I should think.

Somewhere on MSN there's a US map with the unemployment rates by state. Whichever states are starting to recover from the recession might be a good place to start. Maybe. But just because the "official" unemployment rate is falling, doesn't necessarily mean they're creating jobs again. Could just mean that people's checks have run out.

I have no idea where Steve is, I've been gone a week myself because the stupid forum wouldn't let me log in. Could be his same problem. I saw lawsrlaws just yesterday, so he's still around.

But the uneployment numbers could be incorrect because it leaves out certain categories so I thought that just looking at the job boards without filling out a city or zip code would help his search. I avoided career builder altogether because they have a bad habit of spamming your resume to sales and marketing employers looking for sales people.

I think NY would be #1 for him in my opinion but it all depends on the exact field choice and job I guess.

And yes, I didn't see laws maybe because I didn't spend much time on the board the last few days and Steven just went MIA.. lol Just loving the variety of answers on here thats all :P

Dremani: If your friend is in social work, there's definitely opportunities in that field, there's always a demand for social workers. The problem is that it doesnt pay very much so choosing a low-cost city would be best. A friend of mine who is US citizen works in upstate NY and she makes 34K a year so thats no fun. And in NYC, social workers have a hard time making ends meet too because rent is so high there.

However, its still worth a try. He/she can probably find work in their field.

Lawsrlaws is still around, he mentioned he was very busy the past few weeks in a recent post and that agnelson has already answered all posts when he got to it lol

$34,000 a year isn't bad if for entry level with some experience. I agree it could be better considering the cost of rent in NY.

Yea Reba did mention that laws posted on here but and I know which forum he posted on.. Oh wellz I guess everyone is busy except me

Be careful what you wish for!

I guess 34K is not bad, but it's not good, either. I dont really think you can make ends meet in a city on less than 40K. With rent, car, gas, insurance, groceries, cable, happy hour etc LOL

It makes my head spin, wish I still lived at home *sigh* :smt009

I know about all of the expenses part. I have plenty of family in NY who complain daily about the cost of living.

I meant that with this type of salary, it wouldn't be bad for an entry level start in his field to gain some more experience. Living out there wouldn't be a problem because he can always stay at family until he gets on his feet.

The "being busy part" was meant for our usually folks who contribute to this board. They've gone MIA :(

Not directing this towards you or anyting but as far as relocating I've told people from Canada who move to the U.S not to complain about living expenses if you had it "better" in Canada. Especially where health care is concerned. It makes no sense to complain when you can do something about it like moving back. It sounds easier said than done but its the truth.

Oh I'm complaining, my standards of living are MUCH better here than they were in Toronto  I can make all expenses on my own. In Toronto, my parents had to give me a monthly stipend. I love my life here, taxes are low, health care is top notch (when you work for a company that offers it, granted) and well, I can afford the entire rent, my car payment on my own.

I was just saying that entry level is not a lot of money, whether in Canada or in the US, but you'd be better off in the US (well, in some cases). Thats why so many of my engineer friends moved from Canada to the US, not only are taxes lower, entry level offerings are higher.

I was merely commenting on how nice it was living at home with no rent, no groceries to buy etc
