Where to live/work in Scotland?!

Post Wed Jan 16, 2008 5:43 pm

Hello everyone!
I thought this might be a good way of getting some helpful suggestions! I'm looking to do a 4 month school-related internship in Scotland this summer. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good place to go. I will be working in a museum, and at present I'm torn between Inverness and Edinburgh! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I'm moving to a town outside Edinburgh, I'd suggest Edinburgh, but ive only spent 20 minutes in Inverness stuck in rush hour traffic on my trip to Loch Ness :D I'm not a city perosn but I loved Edinburgh

Haven't been to Inverness (yet), but I can tell you a bit about Edinburgh; I've been on exchange here for a month and it's really lovely! The city is fairly large (500,000 in the central city), but very easy to walk around. Absolutely crammed full of history in that you can find interesting sights pretty much anywhere you go just by wandering. There are also lots of gardens, prominent hills, theatres, bookstores, concerts, band-nights, and of course bars. It's a very international city; just earlier today I was reflecting on the fact that it's not the slightest bit uncommon to hear North American accents alongside those from England, Ireland, Australia, and even occasionally Scotland. * laughs * Despite the prominent nightlife scene, it's a pretty safe city for its size.

In the summer the days are going to be really long up here in either place (Edinburgh lies at 56º N, which for comparison is several hundred kilometres farther north than Edmonton!). If you're going to be here in August, you may want to be in the city in order to take full advantage of the renowned Edinburgh International Festival.

Again, I haven't been to Inverness yet, so I can't say anything about it. Still, I don't think you could go wrong with either choice, and you'll probably see some of both places if you're here for a while. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Best of luck!

Definately Edinburgh - I studied there for a year, and it is a fantastic city. There is tons going on, lots of museums, galleries, bars, coffee shops.

It is also well linked with trains, buses, and airplanes so you'd be able to travel easily during your spare time.

Summer is the best time to be in Edinburgh - the days are long (sun is up from about 3 in the morning until 10 at night) and the weather is generally quite good. Winters can be quite dark and wet!
We've got rocks and trees, and trees and rocks, and rocks and trees and trees and rocks and.water!
