Which Visa would be best?

Post Thu Oct 08, 2009 12:15 pm

Since 2003 I have worked as an Operations/General Manager in several Public Assembly Facilities in Canada (Hockey Arenas, Stadiums, etc.)

I don't have a university degree and my formal training is in Power Engineering, I have a provincial license.

I have briefly looked at opportunities in the US in the past and before finding this forum I had a tough time finding out some clear information.

I am hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction so I can research 1 or 2 types of visas so I can have the answers to the questions when employers ask.

I looked at the TN Visa under the Engineer but I'm pretty confident that a Power Engineer doesn't qualify here....I'm hoping I'm wrong as that seems to be the easiest route to the US.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

If you don't have a university degree, a TN is pretty much not available, regardless of any potential job title. Unless you have XX number of years of experience in a particular profession that is on the NAFTA list, plus the ever elusive job offer.

Really, management consultant is the only TN category for those with absolutely no degree or diploma, and I don't see how this fit your job.

Thanks for the feedback, looks like a TN is out of the question.

Is there another Visa that you can suggest or will I need to stay north of the border?

Thanks

Since TN is unlikely, and thus your being Cdn is not really relevant, you might want to ask on a more generally immigration savvy website like immigration.com.

As was mantionned, you need the job offer first, and then hope to find a status that will suit it.

Short of getting a degree or marryinga US citizen....

if your current company has offices in the US and would be willing to transfer you, then you could go for a L-1 visa (a visa for transfer employees).

There are however many requirements, such as being with the Canadian office for at least a year, and I do believe you are required to be in some kind of managerial position or have several years of experience under your belt, which you seem to have. So maybe do a search about the L-1 visa.

Reba and Agnelson are right, not having a degree makes it really hard to move to the US :(

T.O does point to a valid option. The position does not have to be managerial, that is the difference between L1a and L1b.
