E-2 is the one to go for if you're self-employed. It's a better idea than TN-1 even if you can figure out how to get someone at arm's length to do the letter for you, because TN-1 requires "bona-fide non-immigrant intent" and E-2 doesn't.

E-2 on the other hand is a lot more paperwork and requires a "substantial investment".
