Hi,
I am a freelance graphic designer and am planning a trip through SE Asia for 6-8 months. After that I have obtained a UK working Visa and will work in the UK either for my freelance business or with a design studio.
My question is actually a few questions. While traveling through SE Asia and Europe I intend to continue to work for my clients (most of which are based in Canada, some in the US). It'll be off and on, the main purpose for my trip is to travel, work comes second. I figure I'll pull in about $20,000 freelancing while traveling, maybe more. So who do I pay taxes to? Do I just continue to pay taxes to Canada as I normally would or do I need to get all complicated paying taxes in every country? If I still pay to Canada can I still write things off (such as a hotel room used as my office, internet fees, etc.)?
Once in the UK if I get a regular job I understand I pay UK taxes as there is a tax treaty there. What about if I do freelance work? Do I pay to Canada or the UK?
I know, maybe too much grey area here. Any advice would be helpful. I'm not necessarily trying to find away to avoid paying taxes (although it would be nice). I just want to make sure I do everything properly to avoid getting red flagged and audited down the road. I usually do my own taxes online as my business is pretty simple.
I know there are a ton of posts already for tax questions abroad but I couldn't find anything that applies to my sort of traveling/working Gypsy thing. Once again any advice would be most appreciated.
