Wife is Belgian citizen

Post Fri Sep 23, 2011 9:33 am

Hello,
My wife and I have been considering moving to the UK for a little while, we are just at the early stages of seeing what is involved. We have some money built up to be without jobs for a while but will of course want to start working and living down the road once we find the perfect settlement for us. My wife is a Belgian and Canadian citizen, we have been married for 1 year. The belgian consulate has told us that after 3 years, I am able to apply for citizenship. Belgium is of course an original member of the EU and as such I am under the impression that my wife is able to work and live in any EU country. Does anyone know if this is true, and also, does her Belgian citizenship enable me to be able to more easily obtain a working visa or permanent residency in the UK or Belgium? Thanks!

there is something called an EEA Family permit ... See if this is what you are looking for.

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/eucit ... sibilites/

definition of family member & visa type

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/eucit ... ly-permit/

c&p'd part of that link

What is a 'family member'?
If you are an EEA or Swiss national, your non-EEA family members who have the right of residence in the UK are:

your husband, wife or civil partner;
your children or grandchildren (or the children or grandchildren of your husband, wife or civil partner) who are under 21 years of age or are dependent on you; and
the parents or grandparents of you and your husband, wife or civil partner, if they are dependent on you.

Outside of this, once your spouse has their Belgium passport I suggest that you contact the Belgium consulate first then the visa section at the UKBA/consulate in Washington, or simply find the application form from one of the tabs on the EEA family permit section (form VAF5) on one of the links provided

See also (dont know the rules) whether any children can be included on your wifes Belgium passport or have dual citizenship Belgium passport
