Will lose canadian credit history as non-resident?

Post Wed Feb 24, 2010 6:02 am

Hi,

I am just wondering if the TN holder go to US for years job as non-resident, cancel Canadian bank accounts/credit cards, make himself/herself inactive in Canada. Will he/she lose the Canadian credit history/score?

Yes, eventually in seven years, but so what? Canadian institutions do not place so much emphasis on automated credit history in determining credit worthiness as US does, so should you ever need credit, they will look at your financials at that time.

That said, there is no need to cancel all bank and credit accounts just because you are going to US -- even if the move permanent. Such accounts are not considered sufficient ties to worry about being considered resident.

All Cdns who move to US should keep at least one no-fee Cdn chequing account and a no-fee Cdn credit card, for any Cdn transactions that they will most certainly have in the future. There is no problem doing so with the CC companies and banks, and this is much simpler and cheaper than trying to trnsact Cdn items thru a US account.
