Will UK ancestry visa permit any work in Europe?

Post Wed Apr 08, 2009 7:44 am

Hi. I've read a number of topics here looking for an answer to my particular query but I can't find anything relevant, so my question is:

I have a UK ancestry visa (which permits work in the UK). I have already discovered here that that does not permit work in Europe, and that makes perfect sense to me. However, it has been suggested that short work on the continent might be possible if I am working for and employed by a UK company.

I am applying for a position with a UK company. Their office is in the UK. Most work will be in the UK. I would be based in the UK. However, they have stated that they will occasionally need to send the successful candidate to Europe to perform a short software installation. At all times I would be there working for a UK employer, and never directly to a European employer. The UK employer would send me there at their expense and return me when the task is complete.

Is this allowed? Can I accept this position or do I have to decline it? They don't know in advance exactly which countries they are talking about so can't organise a sponsored visa for me themselves in advance (and I just don't think they'd want to go through the hassle anyway).

So where do I stand? Can I work for brief periods in Europe employed by a UK employer? At all times the European client will be paying the UK employer, not me.

Thanx in advance. Great web site by the way!
