Do I need a visa to work for an American company, but live in Canada? I am currently in the US with a J1 visa that is going to expire. I am thinking of proposing to my employer that I work from Canada (and visit on Business for meetings etc.)

The idea being that I can take classes in Canada to qualify for a TN or H1B in the future.

What would be the complications?

Thanks!

I don't see why you would need a nonimmigrant status for that, but when you come down for meetings you can get B-1 status, since the meetings are appropriate for that status.

I can still get B-1 Status even if I am being paid a salary by a US company? I thought that was not possible.

Will you physically be working in Canada or the US?

I used to work for a US company but at the Canadian division. I would occasionally have to go to the US for work (I was a Training Instructor)for one day to two week stints. I had to get an L1B visa. I was actually denied entry and told not to go again for any business purpose without an L1B.

You might want to look into that.
