Work in the USA

Post Sun Jan 16, 2011 11:06 am

Hi,

I am a Canadian Citizen with a Diploma in Health Unit Coordinating, and have been wanting to go out to Colorado for the longest time to live a while and work. Wondering what type of Visa or permit that I can get to go over and work edleast a year???? What is the easiest way of going about this??

Thanks
Sarah

You'll need a TN, which means that you need to qualify for TN (diploma plus experience), and have ajob offer in that field. There are plenty of TN websites that explain the process.

It does not sound like that position is on the TN list, but I;ll let you find out for yourself.

So there is no other way to get a workers visa if I don't have a job offer??? Is there another way I can go about this?

I would upgrade on the education particularly as a registered nurse. Plenty of jobs in the U.S. as an RN and easy to get a visa and work. A diploma will not get you an H1B much less a TN unfortunately...

Well is there a holiday workers visa that I can get??? That would allow me to work in my profession. I will not give up and will keep searching.

Your optimism is spectacular and I mean that in a good way. However, the laws governing these work visas have SPECIFIC requirements in place in order for you to become an employee of a company in the U.S. The H2 visa may be the closest thing towards a "holiday visa" although the work is very temporary in nature and requires that you aren't displacing any U.S. workers...

Here is a link for more info about the visa

... and in all cases you require a job offer first, whereby the potential employer would have to sponsor your visa.

You cannot self-apply for a visa. This is not like Australia, for example, where you get visa, show up, and then look for work. US isn't like that.

Those who wants to work in the US can file H1-B visa given that the applicant has special skill set that would qualify for the "Specialty workers" category

They have to have the job offer first. And it is the employer that files h1-B, not the person seeking work.
