Work in USA Live in Canada Tax questions

Post Thu Jan 07, 2010 11:26 am

I have worked in the US for over 6 years on a TN visa but I live in Ontario. I drive over the border everyday. I have always done my own taxes. I am considering getting them done this year because I worry that I am missing out on $ that I could be getting. I am married with no dependents, but I do work part time in Ontario as a waitress ( ontop of the full time in the US). Would we be better to do the US taxes ourselves and have someone do the canadian taxes? Or get somone to do both? The issue is that getting the US ones is expensive and it seems simple but am I missing out???

Anyone have similar experiances... have suggestions??
Thanks

The fact that you also work in canada is not that big a deal for making your taxes more or less complex.

You should reconsider how you are doing your taxes only if you end up with more US tax paid than you can use as a credit on your Cdn tax return.
As long as you "use up" all the US taxes that you pay when doing your Cdn return, there is nothing extra that any expert will be able to do for you.
