Work Permit to work in UK + Marriage to UK Citizen in Canada

Post Fri Nov 14, 2008 4:47 am

Hey All, I've been reading lots of forums about people who are marrying a UK citizen from being there on a working visa, or marrying then applying for a spouse visa. Unfortunately, I'm in a little more of a complicated situation!

I am working in the UK on a Work Permit, and entrance visa. I am getting married in Canada summer 2009 to a UK citizen. Does anyone know how this affects my work permit? Do I need to apply for a different visa? I know that when I change my name, my passport and work permit papers will have to change as well. Can I do this outside of Canada?

I have been trying to look on the UK visa webpages but I can't figure anything out! if anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

It should not affect your work permit.

If you are getting married in the province of Quebec you cannot change your name in other provinces , I don't know.

Maybe it would be easier anyway to keep your name?

I would suggest that once you are back in the UK with your husband you apply for the spouse visa, this will allow you to have indefinite leave to remain(and become British later) and would allow you to change job without having to ask for another work visa. A work visa is always "temporary" , a spouse visa is more permanent (providing that the marriage last a few years !)

Hope this helps

Re: Right to work, spousal visa in maiden name

I have a problem. I have my spousal visa but it is in my maiden name because that is what my passport said when I applied. Now I am getting my passport in my married name as well as all other documents. I am a teacher and I need to prove that I have a right to work for my new school, however I have my passport and spousal visa in 2 different last names. How can I proove I have the right to work while I am in the process of applying for the name change so I can sign a contract?
