Working Abroad Ideas/Info?

I am looking to get out of the rat race of the corporate world and leave Canada for a year or so on an 'adventure'. What I am wanting to do is go to a mainly english speaking country that isn't overly expensive and explore the country and it's culture. If I can find a job to help subsidize my adventures that would be great but I am finding it's very hard to work in other countries as understandibly they don't want foreigners taking away jobs from the locals or belongers. There must be some countries I think like Canada that cannot find enough workers but can anyone tell me which ones?
Also thru my researching I have found that it's easy for youth to receive help for working/volunteering but not for older people (I am in my 40s).
