working for a couple of days in US?

Post Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:05 am

Hi there,

I'm a Canadian Citizen living in Toronto. I had a request for my services (IT Trainer specializing in a reporting program) for a couple of days in Buffalo, NY which is just over the border near Niagara Falls. The request is from a small US consulting firm (just one guy). He lives too far from the client so wants to send me.

Looking on Wikipedia I can see there are various visas including the TN and so on but I just want to go over for a couple of days work. Is there something that would allow me to do this without having to apply for a VISA of this kind?

They'll probably let you in as a regular B-1 visitor for business to do this:
(1) An alien coming to the U.S. to: engage in commercial transactions (i.e., buying or selling) which do not involve gainful employment in the US; negotiate contracts; consult with business associates, including attending meetings of the Board of Directors of a U.S. corporation; litigate; participate in scientific, educational, professional, or business conventions, conferences, or seminars; or undertake independent research;

Do a web search on "B-1 NAFTA entry" and it will give you more information.

From the sounds of it you're acting on behalf of a supplier in order to do training in something they've bought, the only snag with that is that usually the supplier needs to be Canadian.
Steve.

No, you can't do it. Your displacing a USC. The only way you could do this is if it was a Canadian product, and it was an after-the-sale training stated in the original bill of sale. Otherwise, no-go.
