Working for US company from Canada

Post Tue Apr 08, 2008 9:56 am

Does anyone have any pointers or tips for how it works if I get a job with a US company where I work remotely from Canada? Do I need a work visa still? I expect I would at least occasionally need to travel to the head office on business but 99% of the time I would be working over the internet so how does this work compared to a job where I move to the US?

You don't need any kind of paperwork. Ordinary everyday B-1 entry covers meetings.

The real problem is getting paid. If you're invoicing them, try and get them to accept an invoice in Canadian dollars (good luck, I've never managed it). Remember there is no GST on your invoices, it's a zero-rated export.

If you're directly employed by them you get a W-2 and there is an exchange rate you have to use when you fill in your T1 every year.
