Working for women in Chandigarh

Working for women in Chandigarh

Postby CanuckMich » Fri Feb 03, 2006 4:01 pm

Hello - I'm new to this site.
I've just been offered a position to run a Canadian school in Chandigarh. I have never worked in India before and would greatly appreciate feedback or information on life in Chandigarh - especially in relation to being a single woman.
Thanks everyone!
Michelle

Working in India as a woman has it's challenges. If you've never been there before, you may need a bit of time to get used to the staring and pointing that go along with being a single, western woman in India. You are failry safe in India, but must be firm with men. If they touch you inappropriately, stand your ground. It's good to learn some Hindi like 'thief' if someone tries to touch you. Other than that, the food is great, it's cheap to live and you'll have a good experience. A good book to get is 'Culture Shock : India' as it explains housing, transport, custom, etc. I used this in India and it was invaluble.

I worked in Bangalore for a few years and overall, I loved my experience. I would go back to India again. I felt quite safe everywhere I went, but you do have to be aware of the phenomenon "Eve Teasing"or inappropriate grabbing. It happened to a few of my friends, by not, by any means was it a common occurence. As with travelling anywhere, it is best to be observant and take cues on behaviour, dress, etc. from the people you are living among. Have fun!

Hi Michelle,
I am moving with my family to Chandigarh as well and are looking for a school for my 4y old
I would be grateful if you could send me details of the school you will be running
Since we are going in end August and it will be mid term does anyone have any suggestion?
It will also be nice if you could share what you have learned about living in Chand so far. when are you going?
is there an expat community in Chand?
regards,
simon

As the other members mentioned in previous posts, one does have to be careful of 'eve teasing' in India. I lived in New Delhi for one year and I had an amazing experience. While in India, I travelled a number of times to Chandigarh on business. I really enjoyed it there. It was much quieter than most other large cities in India. I did not experience any eve teasing in Chandigarh, nor did I ever feel unsafe. If you have any specific questions, feel free to msg me.

Hi,

I am also moving to Chandigarh with my family in August/September. I am looking for any useful advice from schools (I have a son 12 and a daughter 9), shopping, expat networks etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!
