Working Holiday in NZ Web Developer

Post Sat Jun 25, 2011 1:50 pm

I'm a recent graduate of MultiMedia program at a College in Ontario. I found a grant which will help fund a working vacation abroad. I really want to go to New Zealand.

I have experience doing freelance web development for a year and a half. As well as a summer job at my College managing the website.

To qualify I think I need to find a company in NZ that is willing to work with me.

I'm looking for any advice on how to find companies which are looking to hire. As well as any tips on cities which have a demand for tech jobs.

Thanks,

Philip

I seem to have misunderstood a working visa. I thought it required having a employer agree to hire you first but on the NZ immigration website it says...

"you must not take up permanent employment (unless you apply for and are granted an ordinary work visa while you’re here)"

Can anyone who has done clarify how this works?

I've been in NZ for 7 years and to my understanding (though things could have changed) working holiday visas are granted regardless of whether you have an employer.. since WH implies that you're only looking to work part time to supplement your 'real' purpose for visiting (which is to 'holiday').

however, when i came on one i was only allowed to work at a particular employer for up to 3 months - then you'd need to find something new. if you're looking for longer term, then yes, would pay to have a job offer in your prospects and apply for a specific work visa in that instance. hope this helps.
